If you'd rather watch a video on the 5 mistake you should avoid making on your cruise, you can watch it right here!

Mistake #1: Not eating in the dining room.

You may get the late dinner time, and I know it’s difficult to wait. But don’t let the convenient buffet tempt you every night! Hold out for the dining room at least once! The food is exquisite.

In my experience, the food served in the dining room was the best food served on the ship. Sure, there were some delicious options at the buffet, but nothing stacked up to the dishes served in the dining room.

In the dining room, you get to choose an appetizer, entrée, and dessert. The options change each night, so you'll likely have the opportunity to try something new! And guess what! If you don't like it, you can ask for something else!

While the food is fantastic, I will admit that perhaps the best part of the dining room is the people you will meet.

You will likely sit at a table with others whom you don’t know. While you might find this to be annoying, it gives you a great opportunity to meet and interact with other guests aboard the ship.

Additionally, you will meet two very important individuals: your head waiter and assistant waiter.

These individuals will serve you each night for the entirety of your cruise. They will work hard to ensure that you have a lovely time. And, you will likely come to love them!

There have been some waiters who have made quite the impression on me! They are always kind and enthusiastic. I am certainly grateful that they were so committed to going above and beyond to create an excellent experience for me and my family!

Mistake #2: Drinking too much too fast.

I know, I know. You bought a beverage package and you want to get your money’s worth! (Not sure if you should purchase a drink package? Read my post on whether or not they’re worth the money here!)

Seriously though, you’ll want to remember every bit of your trip! And if I had to guess, I would say you probably also don’t want to spend most of it hung over either.

Drink. Have a good time. But, I would recommend pacing yourself. Especially if you start early, and why wouldn’t you start early? It’s vacation!

No matter what you choose to do, just remember your main objective: enjoy yourself.

Mistake #3: Not seeing a show.

Sometimes, the shows on cruise ships aren’t the best. However, you should give at least one a try because you never know!

I saw three shows while on my most recent cruise; two stand-up comedy routines and a ventriloquist. All three shows were fantastic.

Cruise lines often work incredibly hard to ensure they have great entertainment for the guests! So, before you decide that your time is better spent at the bar or night club, try a show!

Plus, you can even bring your drink into the theater. So, it’ll be like you never left the bar!

Mistake #4: Packing too much.

This doesn’t sound like a big deal. However, when you see the size of your stateroom, you might change your mind.

Pack the essentials and leave everything else at home.

If you’re not sure what to pack, I have put together a simple checklist that you can get here!

On the list I created, you might discover that some items aren’t necessary for you. If that’s the case, cross it off! No sense in wasting space.

If you are traveling with someone and you think that packing into one large bag is a better idea, you’d be wrong. If you both pack smaller bags, you’ll be able to fit them underneath your bed(s)!

Mistake #5: Trying to do too much.

I know. There are probably 50 different excursions you can do at each destination.

And you should definitely do some activities that sound like fun to you (whether you choose the pay for the excursions or do your own thing).

However, do not do so many activities that you forget to lay out by the beach or pool and relax!

It’s your vacation, after all!

You should definitely spend plenty of time relaxing.

Don't struggle with choosing a cruise! Use this guide to pick the perfect cruise!
  • Mistake #1: Not Eating in the Dining Room

It might be a pain to wait for your time to eat in the dining room, but the food is worth it! The food served in the dining room is much better than food at the buffet.

  • Mistake #2: Drinking too Much too Fast

Pace yourself. It’s your vacation. You don’t want to spend your time hungover do you? You also don’t want to forget half your trip either, do you? This doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy yourself though!

  • Mistake #3: Not Seeing a Show

Everyone should see at least one show that interests them! Not all of the shows are great (if you don’t like it, you can leave), but many of them are fantastic and can really make your vacation more memorable!

  • Mistake #4: Packing too Much

There is not a lot of room in the estate rooms, so don’t pack a massive suitcase! I recommend packing an airplane carry-on size suitcase. This might mean everyone packs one, but these fit under the beds!

  • Mistake #5: Trying to Do too Much

It’s your vacation, so you should relax! Sure, there are plenty of awesome excursions. Have fun but don’t overbook yourself!

  1. I only tried once for cruising. It was fun and I remembered eating too much! I was not able to watch a show during my 3 days cruise. I should have read your blog before departing !!

  2. We just got back from our 1st ever cruise (14 nights). We didn’t enroll in a set dining time but just went when we were ready for dinner in the dining room. We were able to make reservations the night before so we never had to wait for a table. We alway shared table with other cruisers and never had a bad set of dining mates. We always had dinner in teh dining room, breakfast and lunch in the cafeteria. We went to all but 1 of the evening shows and liked all but 2 of the ones we did attend. Nice thing about the shows is that you didn’t pay for the tickets so if you don’t like it, just leave!

That’s awesome; I’m so glad you had such a great experience! You make a really great point about the shows! Since you don’t pay for tickets, you don’t feel obligated to stay if you aren’t enjoying the show. Thanks for sharing your experience! 🙂
